In China's MPV market, the Buick GL8 is widely recognized as a top choice for many consumers and an inevitable benchmark for competitors in its class. Since its domestic production launch in 1999, it has undergone six generations of evolution, with cumulative sales exceeding 2 million units, earning an excellent reputation for the Buick brand. As electrification continues to gain momentum and to meet consumers' diverse car-buying needs, SAIC-GM Buick has now further expanded its MPV product lineup

On December 5th, the Buick Zhijing Shijia was officially launched, offering two trim levels: the Premium Edition and the Luxury Edition. As the second model under Buick’s high-end new energy sub-brand "Zhijing", the Buick Zhijing Shijia falls into the mid-to-large MPV category with its dimensions. It comes standard with a 1.5T plug-in hybrid system paired with dual-motor all-wheel drive across the entire lineup, delivering a CLTC pure electric range of 224 kilometers. In addition to the PHEV variant, it is reported that an EV (battery electric vehicle) version of the Buick Zhijing Shijia will be launched later.

In terms of product specifications, the Buick Zhijing Shijia measures 5260mm in length, 2023mm in width, and 1820mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3160mm. It is currently the largest model in SAIC-GM Buick’s MPV lineup in terms of dimensions. Building on this, the entire Zhijing Shijia lineup offers three exterior color options: Phantom Black, Pearl White, and Starlight Silver, paired with two interior color choices: Amber Warm Brown or Ivory Cloud White.

The Buick Zhijing Shijia adopts an all-new exterior design language, reportedly inspired by Gulfstream private jets. Its front face features an extensive closed-off treatment, as well as standard active grille shutters and hidden door handles, resulting in a drag coefficient of 0.258Cd. Additionally, the front light clusters of the Buick Zhijing Shijia offer 7 adaptive lighting modes and 5 welcome light sequences; the through-type rear light cluster is embedded with 257 ultra-red LED bulbs, with the central "Buick" letter badge illuminating synchronously.

The Buick Zhijing Shijia comes standard with a 2+2+3 seating configuration across the entire lineup, featuring full-grain Nappa perforated leather seats. The first-row seats are equipped with heating, ventilation, memory, and 6-point massage functions; the third-row seats are paired with a 330mm sliding rail, and their backrests support electric adjustment. The second row of the Buick Zhijing Shijia is fitted with multi-posture zero-gravity seats, complete with full-range heating, ventilation, memory, and 10-point massage functions. Meanwhile, these seats can adaptively adjust the zero-gravity posture according to the status and positions of passengers in the first and third rows, and can also work with the front passenger seat to realize the "royal couch" function.

In addition, as the entry-level model of the Buick Zhijing Shijia series, the Premium Edition comes standard with 18-inch rims, a BOSE audio system with 16 speakers (including headrest speakers), energy-saving sentinel mode, dash cam, Silver Wing concierge light carpet, power sliding doors on both sides, heated steering wheel, wool carpet, and in-car fog-free humidifier. Compared with the Premium Edition, the Luxury Edition is priced 30,000 yuan higher, mainly adding configurations such as 19-inch rims, rear cabin multimedia entertainment screen, OMS (Occupant Monitor System) rear cabin camera, gesture control for sliding doors, rear glass sunroof, hands-free power tailgate, rear sunroof with electric sunshade, sunshades for the side windows of the second and third rows, 121-color ambient lighting, 15mm-thick Australian wool carpet, intelligent fragrance system, and thermoelectric refrigerator.

In terms of powertrain, the newly launched Buick Zhijing Shijia is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 1.5T engine and front/rear dual motors. The 1.5T engine delivers a maximum power of 132kW and a peak torque of 255N·m, while the system’s combined maximum power reaches 462kW with a total torque of 775N·m, enabling an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.8 seconds. Additionally, supported by a 40.9kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, the Buick Zhijing Shijia achieves a CLTC pure electric range of 224 kilometers, and comes with 3C fast charging and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) external discharge capabilities.
The Buick Zhijing Shijia adopts an independent suspension combination of front double wishbones and rear five-linkage, paired with a preview magic carpet chassis. Air suspension is standard across the entire lineup, supporting an 80mm travel adjustment.
Overall, the Buick Zhijing Shijia holds a flagship position in SAIC-GM Buick’s MPV lineup, boasting impressive performance in intelligent interaction and advanced driver assistance systems. Coupled with its dual-motor all-wheel drive and air suspension, it demonstrates strong overall capabilities. However, in recent years, a growing number of domestic brands have stepped up their efforts in the high-end MPV market, leaving the Buick Zhijing Shijia facing numerous competitors, such as the Voyah Dreamer empowered by Huawei technology and the all-electric ZEEKR 009.
In summary, SAIC-GM Buick has deeply rooted itself in the MPV market for 26 years, accumulating rich technical reserves. Reliability and comfort have long been the advantages of Buick’s MPV models, along with a high residual value rate. Although the Buick Zhijing Shijia is priced higher than the Buick GL8 family, it outperforms the Buick GL8 Avenir in intelligent technology and powertrain performance, representing the highest level of MPV manufacturing by SAIC-GM Buick to date. It remains to be seen whether it can strengthen Buick’s influence in the high-end MPV market and drive more sales.
